Smart Meter?
Yes, a granny flat can have its own smart meter. In fact, new or replacement meters are generally digital under current arrangements, subject to retailer or provider requirements.
The smart meter rollout
New or replacement electricity meters installed in New South Wales are generally digital smart meters. If you are establishing a new connection for a granny flat, the appointed metering provider will typically install a smart meter, subject to their requirements and site suitability.
Preparing the existing board
The challenge is rarely the smart meter itself—it is the space required to install it. If your existing meter box lacks space or the switchboard is outdated, electrical preparation may be required before the retailer's metering provider can install the new device. This may involve a meter box upgrade or a switchboard panel replacement.
Retailer and metering provider roles
While an electrician prepares the site, upgrades the mains, and installs isolation switches, the physical smart meter is owned and installed by a metering provider on behalf of an energy retailer.
